Louis Garrel

  • Louis Garrel, French actor and director born in 1983 in Paris.

After playing himself as a child in several of his father’s films – filmmaker Philippe Garrel – Louis Garrel entered the Conservatoire d'Art dramatique at the age of seventeen. On graduating, he began a long collaboration with Christophe Honoré, becoming his fetish actor for six films from My Mother in 2004 to Beloved in 2011. He also had numerous roles in the theatre, particularly with Luc Bondy, and in film with Bernardo Bertolucci, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Bertrand Bonello, Michel Hazanavicius, or more recently Pietro Marcello, Greta Gerwig or Quentin Dupieux. Alongside his acting career he directed several short films and won the Jean Vigo Prize for Rule of Three in 2012. He continued his exploration of emotional bonds, between love and friendship, with Two Friends (2015), his first feature. He later signed A Faithful Man (2018) and The Crusade (2021), both co-written with Jean-Claude Carrière. In 2022, The Innocent, an uplifting drama, between thriller, social-issues whodunnit and romantic comedy, was a big hit with critics and audiences alike, and won two Césars including best actress in a supporting role for Noémie Merlant.
