Trelkovsky est un personnage solitaire et discret. Petit employé dans un service d'archives à Paris, cet émigré polonais vient d'obtenir sa naturalisation. Il visite un appartement inoccupé dans un quartier populaire du nord de la capitale. Le propriétaire des lieux, après lui avoir annoncé que l'ancienne locataire vient de succomber à une tentative de suicide, lui conseille d'observer le plus grand des silences par respect pour le voisinage. Malgré ses efforts, Trelkovsky est accablé par ses voisins de multiples reproches infondés. Persécuté, il ne se sent plus en sécurité chez lui.

Notes : premier film tourné en France par Polanski, mais produit avec des capitaux américains et tourné en anglais. La photographie est signée Sven Nykvist, chef-opérateur attitré d'Ingmar Bergman. C'est le premier long métrage à utiliser la grue Louma, notamment pour son sinueux plan d’ouverture.
