Après un grave incident de chemin de fer, le mécanicien Sisif recueille Norma, une petite orpheline. Il l’élève avec son propre fils Elie, qui a le même âge qu’elle, et tous deux s’entendent à merveille. Seulement plus Norma grandit, plus Sisif développe des sentiments ambigus à son égard. Arrivée à l’adolescence, l’obsession de Sisif à l’égard de la jeune fille est telle qu’il refuse qu’elle voit des garçons et devient violent. Mais un ingénieur, Monsieur de Hersan, est bien décidé à demander en mariage sa fille adorée.
