Nach einer wunderschönen Liebesgeschichte führen die Differenzen zwischen Joel und Clementine zur Trennung. Zu unglücklich, hat Clementine beschlossen, alle Erinnerungen an Joel aus ihrem Gedächtnis zu löschen. Als Joel davon erfährt, beschließt er, dasselbe zu tun, und kontaktiert Dr. Mierzwiak, den Erfinder dieses revolutionären Verfahrens. Als ihm alle Erinnerungen durch den Kopf schießen, wird Joel klar, dass er ihre gemeinsame Geschichte nicht vergessen will. Aber jedes Verfahren muss abgeschlossen werden.
