Zwei Gymnasiasten richten durch einem Kampf schwere Schäden an. Ihre Strafe besteht darin, alles nochmal für einen Aufklärungsfilm über die Folgen von Gewalt nachzuspielen.
Aus heutiger Sicht wirkt Die Rekonstruktion, mit seiner Darstellung von Erniedrigung, Gewalt und dem Missbrauch von Autorität, wie eine düstere Prophezeiung zu den grausamen Jahren, die Rumänien bald ereilen sollten. Der Film wurde sofort von der Zensur verboten, er fordere zum Widerstand gegen den Staat auf und Regisseur Pintilie wurde inoffiziell zum Staatsfeind erklärt.
