1947. Le petit Ah-ha et sa famille quittent la Chine continentale pour Taïwan, près de Taipei. Ils s'installent ensuite dans le Sud de l'île, où le climat convient mieux au père, asthmatique. Enfant choyé, Ah-ha devient un adolescent taciturne, dans une famille frappée par la maladie.
