In einem kleinen Dorf, das von Zedern umgeben ist, ist Kozo ein Arbeiter, der im Wald arbeitet. Er lebt mit seiner Frau Yasuyo, seiner Mutter Sashiko, seiner Tochter Michiru und seinem Neffen Eisuke in bescheidenen Verhältnissen. Als ein Tunnelprojekt zur Erschließung des Dorfes in Angriff genommen wird, sieht Kozo darin die Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft.
