Annie traîne sa misère dans les rues de New York où elle vend des pommes aux passants pour survivre. Honteuse de sa condition, elle se décrit comme une riche héritière de la haute-société dans les lettres qu’elle envoie à sa fille Louise, exilée depuis vingt ans en Espagne.
