Beim Sterben ist jeder der Erste ist eine Adaptation des Romans Délivrance von James Dickey, erschienen im Jahr 1970. Dickey spielt in dem Film eine kleine Nebenrolle. Der Film wurde mit nur 2 Millionen Dollar produziert, spielte aber 60 Millionen ein und war somit ein enormer kommerzieller Erfolg. 2017 beliefen sich die Einnahmen auf ca 344 Mio Dollar.
