Raphaël Saint-Clair, un comédien qui a connu la gloire théâtrale et a accumulé les succès féminins, quitte les feux de la rampe pour rejoindre l’ombre d’une maison de retraite pour acteurs vieillissants et désargentés. Son arrivée triomphante est saluée avec circonspection par les pensionnaires. Si son aura, encore intacte, lui permet de séduire la frêle Jeannette, la bonne de maison, ses succès passés heurtent les égos fragiles des autres comédiens, enfermés dans leur amertume et leurs échecs. Et Raphaël y retrouve également Gilles Marny, dont il a autrefois séduit l’épouse…
