En pleine guerre de religions, la catholique Marguerite de Valois dite Margot épouse le protestant Henri de Navarre. Les noces ont été orchestrées par Catherine de Médicis et l’entente entre les deux époux est glaciale. Six jours plus tard, lors de la nuit sanglante de la Saint-Barthélémy, Margot sauve de la mort La Môle, un huguenot avec lequel elle va vivre une terrible passion.
