Im Jahr 1910 nimmt der Senator Ransom Stoddard teil am Begräbnis eines berüchtigten Unbekannten, Tom Doniphon. Als die Journalisten ihn wegen seines Kommens befragen, liefert ihnen Stoddard Erinnerungen… Als ganz junger Jurist entschied er sich, in den Westen zu ziehen. Seine Kutsche wird vom berüchtigten Liberty Valance überfallen, worauf Stoddard sofort von starkem Hass auf den Banditen verzehrt wird, welcher ohne Rückhalt in der Gegend sein Unwesen treibt. Unterstützt von seinem Reisegefährten Tom Doniphon, ruht er nicht, bis er Liberty Valance festnehmen kann…
