A Black Rock, un village perdu au milieu du désert, débarque un étranger : l’élégant John J. Macreedy. Il interroge les habitants, cherchant à savoir comment rejoindre la ville d’Adobe Flat où il doit rencontrer un homme. Les habitants refusent de répondre à ses questions, et Macreedy se rend bientôt compte qu’une étrange menace plane sur la ville.
