Wyatt, Morgan, Virgil et James Earp mènent leur bétail vers la Californie. Près de Tombstone, les trois ainés décident de descendre en ville. Ils laissent derrière eux James, leur frère cadet, chargé de veiller sur le troupeau. Les Earp ne tardent pas à s’apercevoir que sans l’autorité d’un Marshall, Tombstone, livrée à la terreur du clan Clanton, n’est autre qu’une ville sans foi ni loi. À leur retour, les trois frères découvrent le corps sans vie de James. Wyatt, déterminé à trouver le meurtrier, décide alors d’occuper le poste de shérif laissé vacant et de nommer ses frères comme adjoints.
Notes : La Poursuite infernale est une adaptation du best-seller de Stuart N. Lake intitulé Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshall, publié en 1931. Cette biographie romancée du héros éponyme restitue, comme l’intrigue du film, l’épisode mythique du règlement de compte à OK Corral.
