En 1876, dans l'Ouest américain, les batailles se multiplient entre les tribus indiennes et les soldats américains installés sur le territoire. Le capitaine Nathan, proche de la retraite, entreprend sa dernière mission : escorter madame Allshard et sa nièce Olivia Dandridge jusqu'au relais de leur diligence. Mais les indiens ont détruit le lieu et ils sont obligés de faire demi-tour. Après avoir mis les deux femmes en sécurité, il décide de rejoindre la cavalerie afin d’affronter une dernière fois les indiens…
Notes : La Charge héroïque est le deuxième volet de la trilogie de John Ford sur la cavalerie, avec Le Massacre de Fort Apache (1948) et Rio Grande (1950). Les films sont inspirés des écrits de James Warner Bellah sur le quotidien des tuniques bleues, ainsi que des peintures militaires de Frederic Remington.
