Los Angeles. Un vaisseau spatial, qui loge plusieurs extraterrestres en mission d'exploration sur Terre, atterrit en pleine nuit. L'un d’entre eux s'aventure en ville et ses congénères sont bientôt contraints de l'abandonner. Poursuivie par l'armée qui l'a repère, la créature se réfugie à proximité d'une maison de banlieue. Elliott, un petit garçon, est le premier à remarquer cet être apeuré. Séduit, il décide de lui construire un abri dans l'armoire de sa chambre. Sa sœur Gertie et son frère aîné Michael sont dans la confidence.
