Une famille se réunit dans une villa cossue du Sud des Etats-Unis pour fêter l’anniversaire de Big Daddy, que tout le monde sait atteint d’un cancer. Tandis que son fils aîné et sa femme redoublent d’efforts pour bénéficier de ses largesses, le cadet Brick s’enferme dans ses appartements. Il se noie dans l’alcool après la récente disparition de son meilleur ami, tandis que sa femme Maggie brûle de le reconquérir.
Note : le film est l’adaptation de la pièce éponyme de Tennessee Williams parue en 1955.
