On a assassiné Laura, une jeune femme aussi belle qu’intelligente qui travaillait dans la publicité. L’enquête est menée par le lieutenant McPherson, qui interroge les deux principaux suspects : son pygmalion, le journaliste Waldo Lydecker, et Shelby Carpenter, son fiancé sans le sou. A force de se plonger dans la vie de la belle défunte et d’observer le tableau la représentant, McPherson en tombe bientôt amoureux.
