Lors d’une répétition de chorale dans une église, Martha tombe amoureuse d’un des jeunes moines. A la suite d’un événement tragique qui l’affecte beaucoup, elle lui avoue ses sentiments. Le jeune moine est également attiré par Martha et décide de rompre avec l’Eglise. La vie de couple devient difficile et Martha est rongée par la culpabilité.
