Alice Diop
Director born in Aulnay-sous-Bois in 1979.
Alice Diop, raised in a Senegalese family in Seine-Saint-Denis, renders visible individuals, landscapes, and experiences that are missing from French screens. From the stairwell of La Tour du monde (2005) to the RER of Nous (2022), to the courthouse in Saint-Omer (her first fiction, awarded at the Mostra 2022); her cinema draws a cartography of lived experiences from exile, the suburbs, and cultural diversity. Her urban explorations convey the share of violence and injustice attached to such places (like Clichy pour l'exemple, dedicated to Zyed Benna and Bouna Traoré), while working on dimensions rarely associated with these spaces: beauty, poetry, listening, patience . . . blossom before the lens, as they do within her creative framework. It is a matter of heading, as one of her documentaries states, Vers la tendresse (Towards Tenderness) (César 2017 for Best Short Film). Since 2022, Diop has been extending her approach by constituting an “ideal film library of the suburbs of the world” at the Centre Pompidou.© Claire Scoville
