En Géorgie, le major Weldon Penderton et sa femme Leonora mènent une existence isolée dans un fort. Le couple bat de l’aile et Leonora entretient une liaison avec le lieutenant-colonel Morris Langdon, dont la femme est en dépression depuis la mort de leur enfant. L’arrivée du soldat Williams va venir ébranler leur fragile équilibre, tant il va troubler à la fois le major Penderton et sa femme.
Note : le film est adapté du roman éponyme de Carson McCullers, publié en 1941.
