Le docteur Markway, professeur d'anthropologie de renom, désireux de mener à bien ses études et déterminé à prouver que les phénomènes paranormaux existent, loue un magnifique manoir en Nouvelle-Angleterre. Cette vieille et vaste demeure souffre d'une effrayante réputation. C'est justement pour cette raison que le chercheur a souhaité y emménager en compagnie du jeune Luke, héritier de la maison, et des mystérieuses Theodora et Eleanor, douées de pouvoirs médiumniques...
