In den 1950er Jahren in New York ist Andy Kaufman lediglich ein Kind, als er anfängt bei Aufführungen auf der imaginären Szene in seinem Zimmer zu spielen. Es ist also natürlich, dass Andy Schauspieler wird, sobald er erwachsen ist. Er fängt an als Imitator in einem Kabarett aufzutreten, bevor er eine Rolle in einer erfolgreichen Sitcom ergattert. Endlich verwirklicht Andy seine Träume von Ruhm und Größe mit seinen One-Man-Shows. Aber der junge Mann ist ein König der Parade und Witze, er scheint immer jemanden zu spielen. Er kennt keine Grenzen, lässt sich in keine Schublade einordnen. Sogar die Bekanntgabe seiner Krebserkrankung, als er gerade erst 26 Jahre alt ist, wird von allen für einen urkomischen Witz gehalten…
Der Mondmann ist das Biopic des Komikers Andy Kaufman und viele Szenen basieren auf wahren Begebenheiten.
