Un comédien de stand-up originaire de Detroit voit sa vie basculer le jour où la mafia qui l’a soutenu dans son ascension se retourne contre lui. Face aux pressions de l’organisation criminelle, il décide de partir pour Chicago et de changer d’identité, vivant de petits boulots. Aidé par un agent énigmatique et une jeune femme rencontrée dans son immeuble, il va avoir l’opportunité de remonter sur scène. Mais il sent encore une menace peser sur lui.
