Après une dispute avec son épouse, Scott Henderson se rend dans un bar où il fait la connaissance d’une mystérieuse inconnue. De retour à son domicile, il découvre sa femme morte, étranglée avec l’une de ses cravates. Ne possédant pas d’alibi, il devient aussitôt le suspect numéro un de la police. Mais sa secrétaire entreprend de mener sa propre enquête pour démontrer son innocence…
