L’institutrice Hisako Ōishi travaille dans un petit village de l'île de Shōdoshima. Son indépendance choque les habitants, mais elle met un point d’honneur à faire chaque jour le trajet de son domicile à l’école en vélo. Lorsqu’une chute la contraint à l’immobilité, ses élèves viennent à elle.
