Fedora, grande star hollywoodienne désormais retirée en Europe, met fin à sa vie en se jetant sous un train. Deux semaines auparavant, le producteur Barry Detweiler était parti à sa recherche dans l’espoir de la faire revenir sur le devant de la scène. Mais la mystérieuse Fedora vit désormais recluse auprès de gens étranges et s’avère difficile à approcher.

Note : presque trente ans après Boulevard du crépuscule, Billy Wilder signe ici un autre film dénonçant le «star system» hollywoodien adapté d'un roman éponyme de Tom Tryon.
