Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro

  • A Mexican director, born in Guadalajara in 1964.

After studies at the Instituto de Ciencias, Guillermo del Toro made his debut in the film milieu as a make-up artist and special effects expert. He started directing in the early nineties, with the acclaimed Cronos, a gothic tale already testifying to his
attraction to the fantasy and horror genre. An eclectic filmmaker, he went on to direct the adaptation of the Hellboy (2004) comics and tried his hand at the kaiju genre in 2013 with Pacific Rim. In the 2000s, he shot a diptych on the Spanish Civil War: The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth. The following decade was that of his consecration, notably thanks to The Shape of Water (2017) which won him the Oscar for Best Picture and the Golden Lion. His adaptation of Frankenstein is due for release in November 2025.
