La Nouvelle-Orléans, 1850. Dans un immense cirque baroque, la courtisane déchue Lola Montès fait son entrée sur la piste. A chaque représentation, “la plus belle femme du monde” est exhibée au public et doit répondre à des questions sur son sulfureux passé. Elle se remémore alors son mariage malheureux, et ses liaisons tumultueuses avec Frantz Liszt et Louis Ier de Bavière.
Notes : le film est inspiré de la vie de Lola Montez, une célèbre courtisane du 19ème siècle qui fut l’amante de Frantz Liszt et Louis Ier de Bavière. Lola Montès est la dernière réalisation de Max Ophüls, et sa première oeuvre en Technicolor. Acclamé par les critiques (notamment François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette, Jean-Luc Godard), le film fut pourtant un échec public à sa sortie.
