L'architecte Harald Berger est appelé en Inde par le Maharajah Chandra, afin de conduire de nouveaux travaux dans sa province d’Eschnapur. Au cours du voyage qui l’y mène, Harald sauve la belle Seetha des griffes d'un tigre. Il ne tarde pas à s’apercevoir que la jeune femme se rendait également auprès du Maharajah, afin de l’honorer de ses talents de danseuse.
Notes : Le Tigre du Bengale est le premier volet d’un dyptique suivi en 1959 par Le Tombeau hindou. Les deux films sont l’adaptation du roman exotique Le Tombeau hindou écrit en 1921 par Théa Von Harbou, ex-femme et ancienne collaboratrice du réalisateur. L’ouvrage fit l’objet d’une première adaptation cinématographique allemande réalisée par Joe May en 1921, puis d’une seconde réalisée par Richard Eichberg en 1938.
