Johnny Guitare, cowboy connu aussi bien pour ses talents de tireur que pour ses talents de musicien, arrive dans une petite ville d’Arizona. Vienna, la caractérielle propriétaire d’un saloon, l’a appelé à la rescousse. En effet, la terrible et puritaine Emma Small en a après son établissement et veut le faire fermer. Elle accuse sans vergogne Vienna d’y planquer son amant Dancing Kid et sa bande, hors-la-loi notoires. Bientôt, l’étau se resserre autour de Dancing Kid lorsqu’Emma Small l’accuse d’avoir tué son frère. Tandis que Johnny Guitare fait naître en Vienna d’ambigus sentiments, la tenancière haute en couleurs se lance dans un véritable duel contre son implacable ennemie…
Notes : Le scénariste Philip Yordan dit avoir écrit l’histoire de Johnny Guitare comme une métaphore de « la chasse aux sorcières » qui sévissait à l’époque contre les communistes aux Etats-Unis. En effet, Emma Small incarne le McCarthysme, le puritanisme partant en croisade contre les insoumis que sont Vienna, Johnny Guitar, Dancing Kid et le reste de leur bande.
