Jerry Lundegaard, un vendeur de voiture au fin fond du Minnesota est endetté jusqu’au cou. Il organise l’enlèvement de son épouse afin de forcer son richissime beau-père qui le déteste à payer une rançon. Il fait appel à Carl Showalter et Grimsrud, des kidnappeurs légèrement demeurés. Suite aux dérapages incontrôlés des deux malfrats, notamment le meurtre inutile d’un agent de police, Marge Gunderson, une femme policier enceinte jusqu’aux yeux, entame une enquête.
