Lors d’une réception mondaine, le fameux prix « Sarah Siddons » est décerné à la comédienne Eve Harrington. Dans l’assemblée se trouvent Karen, l’épouse d’un dramaturge, Margo Channing, une célèbre actrice, et Lloyd Richards, un influent critique. Tous trois se souviennent des débuts d’Eve. C’était il y a peu de temps encore que la jeune femme s’était présentée dans la loge de la grande Margo Channing. Touchée par la fébrilité et l’admiration sans borne d’Eve, l’actrice l’avait fait entrer dans sa vie en tant que secrétaire. Elle ne se doutait alors pas de l’ambition dévorante qui animait sa protégée.
