Der Architekt Harald Berger wird von Maharadscha Chandra nach Indien gerufen, um neue Bauvorhaben in seiner Provinz Eschnapur zu verwirklichen. Auf seiner Reise dorthin rettet Harald die schöne Seetha aus den Fängen eines Tigers. Bald stellt er fest, dass die junge Frau ebenfalls auf dem Weg zum Maharadscha war, um ihn mit ihren Tanzkünsten zu ehren.
Hinweis: Der Tiger von Eschnapur ist der erste Teil eines Zweiteilers, dem 1959 Das indische Grabmal folgte. Beide Filme sind Verfilmungen des exotischen Romans aus dem Jahr 1921 von Thea von Harbou, der Ex-Frau des Regisseurs und ehemaligen Mitarbeiterin. Das Buch wurde 1921 von Joe May und 1938 von Richard Eichberg zum ersten Mal verfilmt.
