Howard Roark est un architecte novateur aux idées radicales, qui se retrouve à travailler dans une carrière de pierre pour n’avoir pas voulu faire de concessions dans son art. Il fait la rencontre de Dominique Françon, la fille de son richissime employeur, et tous deux tombent amoureux. Mais la jeune femme ne connaît pas la véritable identité d’Howard et travaille pour un journal dont le patron s’oppose farouchement à l’oeuvre de Roark.
