À Nara au Japon, parmi les trois filles de M. Asai, Ayako arrive en âge de se marier. Sous la pression de sa tante et de son père, elle rencontre un jeune banquier, mais sa petite soeur, Setsuko, est déterminée à ne pas la voir dans un mariage malheureux. Elle se met alors en tête de faire se retrouver Amamiya, un ancien amour de jeunesse, et Setsuko, un soir au clair de lune.
