Le jeune Harvey Cheyne est un homme de bonne famille, gâté par son père, un très riche entrepreneur américain. Alors qu’il entreprend une croisière avec ce dernier, Harvey tombe à l’eau et a la chance d’être recueilli par un bateau de pêcheurs. Contraint de passer toute une saison de pêche avec ces hommes, il apprend à évoluer dans un milieu différent du sien où sa condition sociale ne lui sera pas d'une grande utilité.
