Dans le Missouri, Wes McQueen parvient à s’évader de prison grâce à l’aide de ses anciens complices. Il se rend dans son village natal mais apprend avec horreur le décès de sa fiancée… Il décide alors de prendre le chemin de l’Ouest et s’embarque dans une diligence qui ne tarde pas à être attaquée. McQueen parvient à repousser les assaillants et à sauver ses compagnons de voyage Fred Winslow et sa fille Julie Ann, qui lui rappelle son amour défunt. Seulement Wes ne compte pas se ranger de sitôt et accepte de participer à un dernier hold-up…
