Die Schriftstellerin Fumiko Hayashi blickt auf die verschiedenen Kapitel ihres Lebens zurück. Als Kind irrt sie mit ihren Eltern auf der Straße umher. Als Teenager schlägt sie sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durch und führt ein unsicheres Leben. Sie lernt einen Schriftsteller kennen, dem sie ihre Gedichte anvertraut und der sie ermutigt für eine Zeitschrift zu schreiben. Fukimo verliebt sich zum ersten Mal und sieht eine Zukunft, in der sie von ihren Texten leben kann. Doch dieser Moment der Gnade ist nur ein Trugschluss, und schon bald bricht das Unglück über sie herein...
