Nach seinem Militärdienst ist Ugolin zurück in seinem kleinen Dorf in der Provence und plant dort Nelken großflächig anzubauen. Das von seinem Onkel le Papet angebotene Land, das durch den Wassermangel leidet, kann ihm nicht die Bedingungen bieten, um seine Träume zu verwirklichen. Jean begehrt die Quelle, die sich auf dem Grundstück des Nachbarn befindet. Als dieser stirbt, erbt Jean de Florette, ein unerfahrener Stadtbewohner, das kleine gelobte Land...
Hinweis: Jean Florette ist der erste Teil des Tagebuchs von Die Wasser der Hügel von 1963. 1952 hatte der Schriftsteller Marcel Pagnol Manons Rache inszeniert, bevor er entschied, dass das Werk eine literarische Fassung verdiene. Von der Verfilmung Jean Florette wird es eine Fortsetzung geben, Manons Rache, ebenfalls unter der Regie von Claude Berri.
