Panisse, le père de Césariot, vient de mourir lorsque sa mère Fanny lui révèle qu’il n’était pas son père biologique. Il y a vingt ans, lorsqu’elle était une jeune femme, Fanny s’est éprise de Marius mais celui-ci l’a délaissée et elle a épousé Panisse, qui a accepté d’adopter l’enfant. Césariot décide alors de rencontrer Marius en se faisant passer pour un journaliste.
Note : César est l’adaptation du troisième volet de la trilogie marseillaise de Marcel Pagnol. Le premier volet, réalisé par Alexandre Korda, est intitulé Marius (1931). Le deuxième, Fanny (1932), a été réalisé par Marc Allégret.
