1973. Un jeune soldat meurt au combat dans une colonie portugaise en Afrique. Douze ans plus tard, la dictature portugaise est tombée, les colonies ont retrouvé leur indépendance. Les parents du jeune soldat quittent leur province pour rejoindre sa veuve à Lisbonne. De nombreux souvenirs et sentiments refoulés vont refaire surface.
