Tous deux employés dans la boutique du coin de la rue à Budapest, Alfred Kralik, chef vendeur et Klara Novak la nouvelle arrivée, ont le plus grand mal à se supporter. Alfred comprend bientôt que la mystérieuse inconnue avec laquelle il correspond anonymement depuis plusieurs mois se trouve en réalité être Klara. Le jeune homme prend alors la décision de ne pas l’en informer et entreprend de se mesurer à l’aura de son propre double épistolaire. Il lui faudra désormais surpasser cet avatar qui suscite tant d’espoirs chez Klara.
