New York dans les années 1930. Barbara Blandish est une héritière autoritaire et capricieuse. Au cours d’un vol de bijoux qui tourne mal, trois malfrats tuent son mari et l’enlèvent. Les bandits la séquestrent, espérant obtenir une forte rançon. C’était sans compter sur le clan Grissom, famille de kidnappeurs bien plus expérimentés, qui leur dérobe la poule aux œufs d’or.
