Jeff McCloud est une star du rodéo obligé de prendre sa retraite à la suite d’un accident. Il revient sur les lieux de son enfance et se lie d’amitié avec un jeune couple, Wes et Louise Merritt. Wes lui fournit un travail et lui demande de l’initier au rodéo, ce qui inquiète Louise. Entre la jeune femme et Jeff va se nouer une relation complexe et ambiguë.
