Au sortir de la Guerre de Sécession, Jim Garry, un cow-boy vagabond, loue ses services à deux spéculateurs cherchant à déposséder John Lufton de son bétail. Aidés par la fille aînée du riche éleveur, les deux escrocs échafaudent un plan machiavélique afin de s’emparer du cheptel de Lufton. Écœuré par les méthodes des deux escrocs, Jim décide de rejoindre les rangs des défenseurs de l’éleveur.
