Tommaso est un écrivain qui se meurt à petit feu dans une clinique de Rome. A son chevet se trouve son couple d’amis, Giovanni, écrivain lui aussi, et sa femme Lidia. Effondrée par l’état de Tomaso, Lidia s’enfuit de l’hôpital et erre dans les rues. A son retour au domicile conjugal, le couple se rend à la fête de lancement du nouveau livre de Giovanni. La mort prochaine de Tomaso les hante. Ne parvenant pas à chasser la mélancolie, ils atterrissent alors dans une fête mondaine. Mais plus la nuit avance, plus le fossé se creuse entre eux.
Note : La Nuit est le deuxième volet de la tétralogie sur le couple d’Antonioni, composée de L'Avventura (1960), L’Eclipse (1962) et Le Désert rouge (1963)
