Izō Okada, un paysan désargenté et naïf, espère sortir de la misère en devenant un rōnin, un samouraï sans maître. Il intègre bientôt le clan Tosa et s’enferre sous la coupe de l’impitoyable Hanpeita Takechi. Ce dernier, dévoré par l’ambition, transforme le jeune Okada, aveuglément loyal, en tueur aussi efficace que sanguinaire.
Notes : traduit en français par Puni par le ciel ou Le Châtiment, le titre original du film Hitokiri signifie pourtant « meurtrier » ou « trancheur d’hommes » en japonais. Le personnage d’Izō Okada est inspiré d’un samouraï ayant réellement existé. Accompagné de trois autres samouraïs, Kawakami Gensai, Toshiaki Kirino et Tanaka Shinbei (qui apparaît dans le film sous les traits de l’écrivain Yukio Mishima), il fut membre des Quatre Hitokiri du Bakumatsu.
