En 1327, un moine frasciscain érudit, Guillaume de Baskerville, et le novice Adso, s’installent dans une abbaye bénédictine de Ligurie pour un débat théologique. Leur arrivée coïncide avec une série de morts mystérieuses, à priori causées par les forces du mal. Sceptiques, Guillaume et Adso commencent une enquête sur ces décès.
