Dans un petit village du Burkina Faso, Bila et sa cousine Nopoko sont deux enfants qui jouent dans les étendues désertiques. Lors de l’une de leurs escapades, Bila rencontre Sana, une vieille femme esseulée et accusée de sorcellerie. Tous deux se lient d’amitié et Sana devient pour Bila « Yaaba » : « grand-mère ».
